Orklands Refueled

 So I am totally out of Warhammer 40K, but that doesn't mean that Orks aren't still near and dear to my heart. They are just so me, whacked out, crazy ass, fun lov'in, madman!

So it will come as no surprise when I saw one of my favorite bloggers make a post called Orklands Refueled, that it gave me a reason to collect some again. It's based off the rules set Gaslands Refueled. Now I had ZERO interest in doing anything Gaslands until I saw this, here is a link to his post about it Orklands Refueled .

So Jay and I have talked occasionally over the years, mostly when he posts something so super cool it causes my wallet to instantly catch on fire forcing me to pull it out of my pocket to buy this now!

So of course I contacted him over this to get all the super cool nitty gritty details on this. By the way he has posted on his blog rules modifications for this as well as several other cool rule sets. Once I got the information I needed I proceeded to buy six cars, and all the other paraphernalia along with recruiting a friend to 3D print tires for me. 

I am so jazzed I built two model kits these past two weeks and painted them up. This leaves me four to go, but I am going to take a break this next week or so and paint something else to mix things up. But I for sure will be back to this. 

I've eyeballed these cool vehicles for as long as they've been released, but had no reason to buy them being out of 40K. Then Jay came along... thanks man, these are super cool.

Space Hulk commission done! Yeah!

 Just a quickie post, I finally finished the last two Blood Angels for my friends Space Hulk game. Thank goodness and all that is divine, I am finally done!!!!! 

Painting only for me from now on! It's hard to let these go. When you paint up a model they become your babies. Going to another home just don't seem right.

The evil that lurks in the dark, finished

 Yep, I finally summoned up enough mojo to place my personal projects aside and finished those Genestealers. In the end it wasn't so hard, just my heart is not into the subject matter as it once was. Oh I will play for sure, but just lack the conviction to paint and play. I have been in and out of 40K stuff so much I can't keep count. The only game I am currently involved in with Games Workshop is Adeptus Titanicus. Well at least until they put out another cool model.... no stop it... I will resist!

Anyways here are a few shots of what I did as living proof. I placed figures that would be more like the center pieces first, followed by the grunts.

Emperor's Children Contemptor Dreadnought

Wow I have touched this model since July 4th! But that's okay, I've been doodling in other stuff in the meantime and that's all that counts. Do what makes you happy (as long as it doesn't get you arrested that is). New units for my Emperor's Children did not materialize like I hoped in August, but I did get some Infinity stuff that made me do a skip and a hop in excitement. But that's another story. Today for some reason my Contemptor Dreadnought caught my eye and I had an urge to try and push on with it. Probably because I've been painting my Tau animated robots of late and the Purple scheme of the Emperor's Children drew me away from the Tau white.

Today wasn't a painting day but instead was magnetizing the arms so my very expensive model could be used in more than one configuration. I took a few photos with my trusty Ipad camera so they may not be the best but you get the picture (while actually four pictures, yuck, yuck, yuck). Tomorrow I hope to prime the pieces and get this bad boy out of my to do paint pile very soon.

Here are the four pics showing this one armed with a Twin linked Heavy Bolter and a Conversion Beamer (I armed him with this just because the name was so cool, conversion beamer, right out of the 1960's scifi comic books!)

Showcase: XV25 Stealth Battlesuits

Trying to catch up and finish some me projects. These are my Stealth battlesuits I stopped working on a while back. Last couple of days I've put the finishing touches on them. I tried a new chip effect technique with a little piece of foam dipped in a brown paint and wiping off as much as I could before dabbing on figure in certain locations for that wear look. Got carried away in some spots, but I think it came out alright.

Waaagh!-tastic!!!

Well now that I have caught up on a few projects for friends, I decided to do a little something for me. Having a 40K game coming up this Saturday against my friend's dreaded Dark Angels was all the motivation I needed to sit down and paint up a little surprise for him. Grukk Rippa face is an awesome Warboss model that I really enjoyed painting. Though I used a lot more colors than I thought I would on Grukk, the time spent doing so was worth it.

Emperor's Children Horus Hersey 30K

There is just something about the Horus Hersey that reminds me so much of the Roman Civil Wars of ages past. I am very excited about entering this period. It's always a slow process for me, but my Wife has promised a few extra units of this proud chapter to be joining my ranks in August. I do hope this comes true. In the meantime I have plenty to paint. I've given my attention to a few friends projects, but these I have finally caught up on and will be able to work more on this one. This is a Contemptor Dreadnought that I am just in love with. I am taking my time painting it up. It's a resin model from Forge World and resin is not as forgiving as plastic, so I have proceeded at a snails pace on top of doing other stuff for my pals. Here'w what I have so far.

Yes it's not much, but I already have a vision of what it will look like when done. It will be beautiful. Of course everyone's children are beautiful to them (get it, Emperor's Children, my Children.... Okay never mind).

WIP: Emperor's Children 30K Horus Hersey

One of several projects I have going simultaneously, Today I felt like painting purple (that's right Skip, Purple! Live with it or I'll paint your horses purple!!!;)). So out came my Emperor's Children. I screwed up reading the 30K supplement codex (basically an Army book of what you can and can't have) and thought I could equip my regular Marine squads with the weapons choices I made. Turns out I was looking at the Veteran squad (Elite choice instead of regular Troop choice). Oh well, it's fantasy Science fiction so ha!

The above is my Contemptor Dreadnought I started building. I talked about and showed the build pictures of this in a previous post. Here it is with a little work done to it.

Here is one completely painted Emperor's Children Marine to show you what the squad will look like when finished.

Tomorrow I get to have the Dentist dig around in my mouth to fix some problems, so will see how I feel when I get home if I can knock some more of these boys out.

Less time means more projects of course!

Things have come to a crawl as my Wife underwent surgery last week and hobby time took a back seat to more important real life time. With my Wife feeling a bit better I was able to mess about in my hobby room and I started a few more projects. Nothing focused just did a little bit of this and a little bit of that. It felt good and was fun and that is what counts. So this is what took place:

Finally assembled the last five Necrons for my buddy Al, As he has patiently waited for these, I promised myself for every color I place on one of my own projects I would match it by placing a color on his. This picture is a little further along, but here they are with the primer on them.

Same thing with my buddy Skip, time to get his Moorish Warlord base on the move and I finished the horses and now only have the riders to go.

....and finally my little Horus Heresy project with my Emperor's Children Contemptor Dreadnought. Forge World resin kits are really expensive, beautiful, but expensive. This means taking ones time to get it right the first time, because my modeling skills are not the best, I didn't want to have bad things happen that would challenge those skills. As you can see with the picture below there are quite a few parts. Maybe not as many as on a plastic kit but what differs with the plastic kits (normally) is there is no slot A connects to slot B thing going on here. You have to figure out the positioning beforehand and I used a pencil to mark where I wanted stuff to go. Figuring out the feet was first. You especially have to be careful with the glue. Unlike the plastic kits using the insta-cure (super glue) on resin is it bonds almost immediately so you need to be precise off the get go when it comes to where you really want the part. Hence me using pencil to exactly mark.

Once I figured out the stance it was lining up the joints to look like a realistic pose. I think it didn't turn out to badly.

Finally the prime and I've decided to paint up everything in a sub assembly fashion. So I will complete this part before adding on the next so I don't have to worry about getting around bits with the brush.

Showcase: 28mm terrain for Saga

Whew, finally got a chance to do some blogging. So I am posting the finished project of making some hobby terrain to make my boards look nice. Again these are from Worldsmith Industries and are made from resin. The trees I ended up using I picked up from a flea market. I tore the trees off the old bases, which basically meant snapping them off at ground level because of glue used. I used a pin vise to drill out the bottom of the trees and then used plastic rod to glue in hole to use as pins for placing on Worldsmith's bases. Did a little dry brushing on bases, little static grass, polyurethane for protection, and then a mat coat to take off the shine. Presto change-o it looks pretty good in the end I think.

WIP: 28mm terrain for Saga

Got a chance to sneak in a few paint strokes on my terrain pieces today. The browns are done, and I have picked out the rocks in black that I will now paint grey and then do some dry brushing on them to make them pop. Then it's the static grass placed in a few spots and I will be done with bases. I've gotten out my trees I am going to use and figured out how to separate them from the bases they are on now without destroying them to place them on these new bases. More pics later.

28mm Terrian for Saga (or other systems)

Howdy folks,

Been cleaning up and reorganizing hobby room to a standard of chaotic order, instead of Chaos rules and things are disappearing into the warp. Well I'm still deciding what I want to paint or what I have to paint, and then a thought hit me. Why don't I have any nice terrian pieces? Well what it comes down to for me is that it's boring and takes up my time painting figures. So I ask myself if I am going to take the time to paint decent miniatures wouldn't I want them to look nicer next to a nice painted piece of terrian instead of felt? Of course I would.

Well a friend of mine (Skip) showed up to CincyCon with some really nice terrain pieces he had picked up from Worldsmith Industries and I just loved them. Now I know my friend probably told me beforehand about them, but it must have went in one ear and out the other. Seeing them in person though got my attention.

I picked up three different size forest bases along with some tree inserts, and whats really cool inserts if you want trees out of the way. This makes them multi usable in Saga for Woods or rocky ground. We all know permanant terrain pieces are lovely but sometimes you want to move a tree out of the way and these nicely made resin pieces from Worldsmith Industries fit the bill for me.

I ordered through this gentleman and was able to pay for it using Pay Pal and three days later, bang they show up on my doorstep! Can't beat that service. Having them in hand and looking them over you have your typical air bubble here or there, and some resin that needs to be cut or sanded from the mold, but I have to say I really didn't have to work that hard to overcome this. I am really pleased with the product. I especially like the textured terrain as I can use dry brushing techique to make them  look really nice with little effort.

As Worldsmith says you need to wash them with mild detergent to get the mold release oils off before you prime them. Here are a few photos of what I have done so far.

As I go and finish them up I'll post some more pictures of them up close so you can see the detail of the resin piece better.
